Euromilliones, a European dream come true

Euromilliones history

On 13 February 2004, the idea of creating a pan-European game was made a reality when the first draw in history of the Euromillones was held. A decade had been spent creating and planning this European project.

The idea arose in the 1990s, but it was not until the 21st century when it began to take shape. The arrival of the common currency, the euro, in 2002, was one of the final boosts that the draw needed to come into existence, since it created more possibilities of offering common prizes at common prices.

Thus in September 2002, representatives from Loterías y Apuestas del Estado (Spain), Française give Jeux (France) and Camelot (The United Kingdom), after conducting the respective studies, came together at a meeting in Madrid, where it was decided how the game would operate. There, the game's three founding countries also created the game known as Euromillones.

The game went on sale on 7 February 2004 and, as previously mentioned, the first draw was held on Friday, the 13th of the same month. The draw was not only a success, but it was also a reality. This, it is not surprising that in October 2004,the lottery organisations of Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal and Switzerland were incorporated.

The largest prize distributed in the history of the draw was in the United Kingdom, where a prize of more than ⿬129,000,000 was won on 10 October 2010. Until then, the record for the largest jackpot had been in Spain, where a prize of more than 126 million euros was distributed in 2009. The prize is currently the second of the largest prizes distributed by Euromillones.

Today, Euromillones is in its second five-year period, enjoying the same success it experienced in the beginning. It is already the favourite European draw of many on the continent.
