The partnership between the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) and LAE has been active for over two decades. The first draw of the LoterÃa Nacional (National Lottery) to benefit the AECC was held on 6 May 1989, coinciding with the â¿¿European Year Against Cancerâ¿¿. Since then, new draws are held every year, the liquid profits of which are completely allocated to this Association, which fights this illness everyday. Since then, LAE contributes funds which help finance the cancer treatment, prevention and research programmes in Spain.
Since 2010, and just like with Spanish Red Cross, based on the General State Budgets of 2010, the way in which LAE collaborates with the Red Cross has been changed to the contribution of a fixed amount to this cause. This change has been made because the revenue from these draws has varied from one year to the next, thus creating a financial insecurity that could pose a problem for the organisation of the entity's revenue and expenses. With this new system, greater financial stability is ensured.
The AECC is a charitable entity which aims to prevent the development of this illness, support the needs of the patients and their relatives and promote quality research. To do this, it spreads its prevention message throughout society, finances cancer research projects, provides social and psychological assistance to those affected by this illness, carries out hospital activities with children, provides assistance to those who want to quit smoking, carries out prevention programmes at schools and offers rigorous, precise and high-quality information.
