The Lotería Primitiva has the privilege of being the first game in our history. It was the year 1763 when the so-called ‘Lotería Real’ (Royal Lottery) arrived to our country. The ‘lotto’ consisted of placing a bet by selecting as many as numbers as one wanted between 1 and 90. Five balls were selected in the draw. The player had multiple combinations when choosing their bets. It became very popular, as shown through expressions like “tocarle el gordo” (winning the big prize). Almost a century later, in 1862, the first Spanish lottery, the Lotería Primitiva, disappeared. This lottery spent a whole century in oblivion before it came back in full force. The year 1985 saw the comeback of the Lotería Primitiva, or simply La Primitiva. The most popular lottery of our games, adapted to new times, returned 100 years later to become one of the most preferred games of Spaniards, and it remains that way today.
